Robert Karl Cellars Claret Downtown Spokane Winery
Claret
2016
Horse Heaven Hills

The 2016 Horse Heaven Hills Claret (red wine) is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc, 13% Malbec and 7% Petit Verdot.  This wine was aged in 100% French oak for 20 months, 25% of the oak was new.  The ideal consumption is 2 to 5 years from release date, but this wine will develop for another 5-7 years.  The alcohol by volume is 13.9%. This wine was bottled July 2018.

2016 started out very much like 2015 with an unusually warm winter and early spring that led to the earliest bloom on record. By mid-May we estimated we were a good 2 weeks ahead of average and the sun kept shining! At this rate we anticipated 2016 would surpass the total heat units of 2015. However, by June the temperatures cooled to our usual range and progressed beautifully until harvest time. Harvest commenced on September 7th and wrapped up by October 11th. The wines have intense flavors, beautiful color & excellent balance.

Cabernet Sauvignon
2016
Horse Heaven Hills

Our flagship Cabernet Sauvignon is luxurious and elegant with a nose of dark cherry, vanilla, black current and cassis. On the palate the full-bodied richness is expressed with dark red and black fruits, wood smoke, mocha and a hint of anise that flows to well integrated silky tannins. This wine will benefit from a few years in the cellar and should last for a decade or more.

The 2016 Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The fruit was sourced from our vines on Gunselman Bench, McKinley Springs and Phinny Hill vineyards.  It was aged in 100% French, 50% new for 21 months.  The alcohol by volume is 13.5%, 300 cases produced, bottled July 2018.

The 2016 started out very much like 2015 with an unusually warm winter and early spring that led to the earliest bloom on record. By mid-May we estimated we were a good 2 weeks ahead of average. By June the temperatures cooled to our usual range and by September we cooled significantly with occasional (and unusual) showers. Ripening progressed beautifully! Harvest of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes began on September 20th on Phinny Hill, followed by Gunselman Bench on September 22nd and October 3rd and finished with McKinley Springs on October 11th. Although these wines exhibit lush ripeness, the backbone of acidity creates a wine with great aging potential.

Joe occasionally asks for a “glass of inspiration” while we are working at the winery. We felt that name fully described the few select barrels of reserve quality wine.

The 2016 Horse Heaven Hills Inspiration (reserve red wine) is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot.  The fruit was sourced from our estate vines at Gunselman Bench, Andrews Horse Heaven Ranch, McKinley Springs and Phinny Hill vineyards. The Phinny Hill Cabernet Franc was harvested on September 26th. The 2017 wines have intense flavors, beautiful color & excellent balance.

This wine is 100% Cabernet Franc from our vines at Phinny Hill vineyards. It was aged in 100% used French oak for 19 months.  The ideal consumption is 2 to 5 years from release date, but this wine will develop for another 5-7 years.  The alcohol by volume is 14.1%. This wine was bottled April 2019.

2017 started out cooler and wetter than recent years resulting in a later bud break. Once Mother Nature warmed up we saw average to above average temperatures into the summer. By mid September, temps cooled allowing the physiological ripeness to catch up with the brix (sugar content.) Although we saw many fires in Washington, thankfully we were not affected in Horse Heaven Hills.

Rose'
Rose of Cabernet Franc

Our Rose’ of Cabernet Franc is made in a saigne’e method. After crushing our Cabernet Franc grapes, we allow the juice to soak on the skins for a short period, then we “bleed” off a small amount of wine and ferment it separately. The color is a beautiful deep fuschia or as the French say, oeil de perdrix (uh’y duh pair-DREE) literally meaning eye of the partridge. It was bottled March 2016.

Enjoy this wine lightly chilled with almost anything! Although it has a pale color, it’s not a white wine, it has the body & intensity of a red wine.
