Horse Heaven Hills
Reserve Red Wine
Joe occasionally asks for a glass of inspiration while we are working at the winery. We felt that name fully described the few select barrels of reserve quality wine.
2016 started out very much like 2015 with an unusually warm winter and early spring that led to the earliest bloom on record. By mid-May we estimated we were a good 2 weeks ahead of average. By June the temperatures cooled to our usual range and by September we cooled significantly with occasional (and unusual) showers. Ripening progressed beautifully! Harvest commenced on September 7th and wrapped up by October 11th. Although these wines exhibit lush ripeness, the backbone of acidity creates a wine with great aging potential.
The 2016 Horse Heaven Hills Inspiration (reserve red wine) is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot. The fruit was sourced from our estate vines at Gunselman Bench, Andrews Horse Heaven Ranch, McKinley Springs and Phinny Hill vineyards. It was aged in 100% new French oak for 20 months. The ideal consumption is 7 to 10 years from release date, but this wine will develop for another 15 years. The alcohol by volume is 14.2%, 50 cases made, bottled July 2018.
