Horse Heaven Hills
2016 started out very much like 2015 with an unusually warm winter and early spring that led to the earliest bloom on record. By mid-May we estimated we were a good 2 weeks ahead of average and the sun kept shining! At this rate we anticipated 2016 would surpass the total heat units of 2015. However, by June the temperatures cooled to our usual range and progressed beautifully until harvest time. Harvest commenced on September 7th and wrapped up by October 11th. The wines have intense flavors, beautiful color & excellent balance.
The 2016 Horse Heaven Hills Claret (red wine) is a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc, 13% Malbec and 7% Petit Verdot. This wine was aged in 100% French oak for 20 months, 25% of the oak was new. The ideal consumption is 2 to 5 years from release date, but this wine will develop for another 5-7 years. The alcohol by volume is 13.9%. This wine was bottled July 2018.
