Horse Heaven Hills
Reserve Red Wine
Joe occasionally asks for a glass of inspiration while we are working at the winery. We felt that name fully described the few select barrels of reserve quality wine.
The weather in 2013 took us on a wild ride! We had some rain in June, dust storms and even hail but by July we settled into record high temperatures. Ripening progressed quickly and we assumed harvest would come early but by mid-September temps cooled and rains moved in. The cool down allowed us to let the grapes hang longer and develop full varietal flavor. We harvested the Bench on September 30th; the fruit was beautiful! The wines have intense flavors, beautiful color & excellent balance.
The 2013 Horse Heaven Hills Inspiration (reserve red wine) is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec and 4% Petit Verdot. The fruit was sourced from our estate vines at Gunselman Bench, Andrews Horse Heaven Ranch, McKinley Springs and Phinny Hill vineyards. It was aged in 100% new French oak for 28 months. The ideal consumption is 7 to 10 years from release date, but this wine will develop for another 15 years. The alcohol by volume is 14.1%, 50 cases made, bottled September 2015.
19/20 Rand Sealey, Review of Washington Wines This blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec and 4% Petit Verdot exhibits a deep ruby color and an intense nose of blackberry, old tree cherry, plum, cassis, crushed roses, pipe tobacco, sandalwood and smoldering incense. On the palate, the flavors are deep and penetrating, marked by notes of black licorice, dark cacao, Sumatra roast and scorched earth. The intensity continues on the back with macerated berries, roasted walnuts, mocha, toffee and graphite, followed by a lingering, slightly grainy tannin finish.
