Horse Heaven Hills
The weather in 2013 took us on a wild ride! We had some rain in June, dust storms and even hail but by July we settled into record high temperatures. Ripening progressed quickly and we assumed harvest would come early but by mid-September temps cooled and rains moved in. The cool down allowed us to let the grapes hang longer and develop full varietal flavor. We started harvest September 13th, about 10 days earlier than usual; the fruit was beautiful! The wines have intense flavors, beautiful color & excellent balance.
The 2013 Horse Heaven Hills Claret (red wine) is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, 9% Malbec and 9% Petit Verdot. This wine was aged in 75% French oak and 25% American oak for 23 months, 100% of the oak was new. The ideal consumption is 2 to 5 years from release date, but this wine will develop for another 5-7 years. The alcohol by volume is 14.5%. This wine was bottled September 2015.
Outstanding Wine Press NW (Top Wine in the Red wines $30 and under Competition) This Spokane winery has been earning gold medals for this wine for more than a decade, so it’s no surprise to see it at the top of our list of affordable red blends. It leads with Cabernet Sauvignon and provides aromas of clove, black pepper and black cherry, followed by big flavors of bittersweet chocolate, pomegranate and a hint of underlying earthiness. It’s all backed by fine-grained tannins that lead to a long, satisfying finish.
