Horse Heaven Hills
The 2012 vintage was downright abundant compared to the reduced crop of 2011! We started slowly due to an unusually cool and damp June. By July the days warmed and we were seeing the "normal" heat units. We experienced some haze and humid weather with severe thunderstorms, perhaps caused by the significant Wenatchee Complex fire. We did not see any "smoke taint" to the vines (or wines.)
The 2012 Horse Heaven Hills “The Phinny” Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Phinny Hill Vineyard. It was aged in 100% new French oak for 23 months. The alcohol by volume is 14.5%. It was bottled September 2014.
Rand Sealy Review of Washington Wines 19/20 points This 100% varietal wine displays a deep ruby-crimson color and an enticing, perfumed nose of raspberries, cherries, plums, cassis, crushed roses, tobacco, sandalwood and spiced incense. On the palate, the flavors are deep cored and tautly focused, showing much varietal character, along with notes of red licorice, cocoa, French roast and loam and dust earth. The back reveals sensations of pressed berries, toasted walnuts, kirsch and cassis liqueurs, graphite and toasty oak (80% new French) followed by a lingering lightly spiced (cardamom, clove) and herbed (coriander, sage) ripe fine grained tannin finish that softens up at the end.
