Horse Heaven Hills
Reserve Red Wine
Joe occasionally asks for a glass of inspiration while we are working at the winery. We felt that name fully described the few select barrels of reserve quality wine.
We refer to 2008 as the vintage of the one armed winemaker! Joe tore his rotator cuff while hiking with our son & had surgery the day after we pressed the Sauvignon Blanc. Our family friend, John Nevers agreed to be our cellar apprentice. He was literally Joe’s right hand man.
The spring and summer were very cool. We rarely saw temperatures break 100°, usually they were in the low 90’s. We experienced a slow, even ripening resulting in incredibility balanced grapes. Harvest and fermentation progressed normally. The wines have intense flavors, beautiful color & excellent balance.
The 2008 Horse Heaven Hills Inspiration (reserve red wine) is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec and 7% Petit Verdot. The fruit was sourced from our estate vines at Gunselman Bench, Andrews Horse Heaven Ranch, McKinley Springs and Phinny Hill vineyards. It was aged in 100% new French oak for 28 months. The ideal consumption is 5 to 7 years from release date, but this wine will develop for another 7-10 years. The alcohol by volume is 13.5%, 100 cases made, bottled February 2011.
19/20 points Rand Sealey, Review of Washington Winese This is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec from the Gunselman Bench, Andrews, McKinley Springs and Phinny Hill vineyards. It exhibits a deep ruby color and seductive aromas of raspberry, huckleberry, cassis, crushed roses, sandalwood, hyacinth, cigar box and incense. The dark fruits are full and supple, wrapped around a deep core and marked by licorice, bittersweet chocolate and Horse Heaven scorched earth and minerals. The back reveals notes of roasted berries and nutmeats, framboise liqueur, mocha and graphite, followed by a lingering, toasty, lightly spiced fine grained tannin finish. Shows exquisite depth and balance. (October 2012)
