Wine of the week!

Columbia Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2002 vintage was one of the great classic Washington vintages. If you compare the average heat-unit curve for Washington vineyards to the 2002 curve, they are practically identical. We enjoyed an excellent harvest. This was a year of deep color compounds called anthocyanins. The Cabernets marched into the winery lot after lot, all consisting of perfectly matured fruit with exciting, outspoken flavors.

The 2002 Columbia Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from McKinley Springs Vineyard in Washington’s newest appellation, Horse Heaven Hills. It was aged in 100% new French oak  for 25 months.  The alcohol by volume is 15.1%, pH is 3.51, and titratable acidity is 0 .6g/ml.  Only 75 cases, bottled January, 2005.

Outstanding! Wine Press NW  A classic wine from a classic vintage and 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon from McKinley Springs Vineyard in Horse Heaven Hills. The aromatics include mocha, Bailey’s Irish Cream, blackberries, marionberries, plums, crushed herbs and oak. Inside, it’s hedonistic, ripe and oaky, with juicy blackberries up front, then mocha alongside the sweet tannins, chased by nice acidity and a black cherry finish. Enjoy the richness all the way through. (Winter 2005/2006)

Excellent Wine Press NW Fab-Cab Tasting The talented winemaking of Dr. Joe Gunselman is helping to elevate the profile of Spokane, and he doesn’t hold much back in this reserve from McKinley Springs Vineyard in Horse Heaven Hills. Alluring plums, black cherries, mint, toast and chocolate set the stage for some sassy dark fruit flavors. Vanilla bean, more mint and tea add to the nice structure, and there’s great acidity to back up the tannins and fruit.

92  Paul Gregutt Wine Enthusiast All McKinley Springs (Horse Heaven AVA) Vineyard Cab. Tight, austere and severe in its purity, it shows cassis, plum, and cherry fruit. Herbal, lightly dusty, varietal and firm; with hard, true tannins. At this stage it is less complete and concentrated than the  regular bottling, but with a classy Cabernet feeling, this wine may surprise with its age worthiness. (April 2006)

90  Wine & Spirits Rich and sumptuous, this Reserve is a barrel selection, and as such is showing mostly oak notes at the moment, overlaying a bright sweet core of black cherry fruit with a formidable tannic grip. From Horse Heaven vineyard sources, it’s certain to grow into itself with time. An ideal steakhouse wine. (August 2005)
